Why ecosy®

Why we’re funding a production run.

Right now we’re collecting a limited run of orders to take the ecosy® into production. The bike in our photos is our working prototype, hand-built in stainless steel: heavy, shiny, a little rough at the edges. In production those sharp corners become the smooth, flowing surfaces You see in our renders. Read how it started

The production frame is aerospace-grade, heat-treated 6061-T6 aluminium: much lighter, and built to take a beating. Welding softens the metal right where it carries the load, so afterwards the whole frame is re-heat-treated back to full strength. That takes a proper production furnace. That is exactly what Your orders make possible.

We’re here to bring You quality and function. That’s why every frame carries a lifetime warranty.

How it got made

The honest version. What the idea came from, what went wrong on the way, and the two pieces still on the bench.

It started with a curve

More than twenty years shaping A-class surfaces for European cars leaves You with one habit that never goes away: You can see when a curve is wrong. The first ecosy® tubes were bent by hand, one at a time, on a bender in the corner of the workshop, until the line running through the frame matched the line in the sketch. That curve is still the shape of the trike today.

Learning to weld stainless, the hard way

A frame has to be welded, so he learned to weld. Stainless steel is unforgiving and TIG never came right, so the first rideable prototype was arc-welded instead: heavy, shiny, rough at the edges, and strong enough to answer the only question that mattered, does this thing actually work. The production frame is a different animal, heat-treated 6061-T6 aluminium. It exists because that rough one got ridden first.

Eight bearings a side, by hand

Each front wheel hangs on its own double wishbone, and every wishbone is built the slow way: eight stainless steel ball bearings and four stainless joints per side, pressed in one at a time, twice over. It is the least glamorous part of the whole machine and the part that decides whether the steering feels vague or exact. Stainless, because it lives under the front of a trike that will spend its life outside in the weather.

Automatic, on purpose

The core idea was never a fast bike, it was an easy one. A mid-drive motor and an automatic gear hub, developed as one matched unit, mean there is nothing to shift and nothing to think about: You pedal, it picks the gear, the motor adds the push. Put that on three wheels and it stays upright while You do it. Getting active again shouldn’t need a learning curve.

The seat we had to give up, then got right

The first seat was a long luxury bench, something to lean back against, room for two, and genuinely lovely to sit on. It also sat too high and pushed the handling around in corners, so it was cut from an earlier prototype. Losing it hurt. What replaced it is large, rounded and flat, and it earns its place a different way: the top swaps out. Hard racing, soft comfort, or something made for You.

A cargo area that adapts to Your hobby

The cargo area is wood, and every panel takes the same universal lock. A rod holder for the fishing, a tie-down for an awkward load, a bracket for whatever Your weekend involves, they all clip into the same mounting. The 3D files are free to download, so if the part You need doesn’t exist yet, You can print it.

One flat panel that closes the cargo area, folds down into the desk top, and doubles as a ramp for getting something heavy in. The first version worked. This one is being simplified until there is nothing left to take away.

The Cover-Seat

A cushion that makes the front seat properly comfortable, built into a cover for the cargo area, and extended to cover the whole trike, back seat included, when it is parked. One piece doing three jobs. This is the one currently under the pencil.

So that’s where we are

The frame, the drive and the cargo are settled. The last two pieces are on the bench, and we are finishing them while we find out how many of You want one. That is the whole plan, and there is no clever version of it.

Electric trike questions, answered

The things people most often ask us, straight answers.

How far can it go on one charge?

Honestly: 30–50 km on the Standard pack, 35–55 km on the Extended, 45–70 km on the Long range. A loaded cargo trike is not a light commuter, it uses roughly 20–30 Wh per kilometre, so we quote the band You will actually see rather than the best case on a flat road with no load. The more You pedal, the further You go. Carry a charged second pack in the cargo box and You double it. The display always shows Your charge and the distance You have got left.

Is it hard to ride? Do I have to change gears?

No. The automatic hub shifts itself, there’s nothing to change. You just pedal, and a sensor reads how hard You push to give smooth, natural power.

Will it tip over?

No balancing needed. Three wheels keep it planted whether You’re moving or stopped, with a low centre of gravity for confidence at any speed.

Will it fit in my car?

It splits into two parts, roughly 29 kg and 19 kg, so it lifts into a station-wagon boot a piece at a time. The battery lifts out first to make the heavier part lighter still.

Where do I keep it?

ecosy® is a proper cargo trike, about a metre wide at the front, so it lives where Your car or mower does: a garage, carport or shed, or outside under a weather cover. It’s not a fold-in-the-hallway bike, and that size is exactly what makes it so stable and roomy.

I’m not very fit. Can I still ride it?

Absolutely. The motor does as much or as little as You like, so You can start on day one at any level. As You feel stronger, dial the assistance back and let Your legs do more. A gentle way to get active on Your own terms. No pressure, no start-line.

How fast does it go?

It gives You assistance up to the legal limit for Your country (usually 25–32 km/h), so it’s road-legal wherever You ride. The motor is set to Your market at the factory. It never fights You: the more You pedal, the easier that speed feels.

How long does it take to charge?

Around 4–6 hours from empty with a standard charger, and You can top up any time, there’s no need to run it flat first.

How much does it cost?

You choose. Start from the Maker kit and build up, or pick a ready-made tier, the price updates as You go.

No BS

Three things we won’t pretend about.

A trike is not a bicycle, and some of what makes it good costs You something. Better You read it here than find it out in Your driveway.

It needs room to turn. The outer turning radius is about 3.8 m, so it comes around like a small car rather than a bike You can spin on the spot. That is the price of proper steering geometry, and it is the same geometry that makes it track straight and stay planted at speed. The steering angle is adjustable, calmer or quicker, to suit You.

It lives outside, not in the hallway. Three wheels and a cargo bed need a shed, garage or carport. It is not something You carry upstairs. It does split into two pieces to travel in a car, so going places with it stays easy. See how it comes apart

Shipping costs more than a bike. It is bigger and heavier, and it ships crated. We show shipping as its own line and never fold it into the headline price, so You can see exactly what You are paying before You commit.
